A total of 211 unfinished housing developments have been completed as part of a drive on addressing the estimated 2,000 'ghost' estates in Ireland.

Plans are in place and in many cases work has been started in a further 523 housing estates.

Housing Minister Jan O'Sullivan has published a report on progress being made in tackling the problem.

Minister O'Sullivan said that a lot of progress has been made, and that the pace will be able to increase.

"I do understand that it's a dreadful situation for people who - in many cases - have paid a lot of money for their homes," she said.

"In many cases, (they) are now in negative equity.

"We are working through it, we are addressing the problems.

"We expect in some ways that the process will speed up as time goes on because we've set the thing in process now.

"We will work through, and we hope that we will address all of the issues in a relatively short period."
