A British grandfather has said today that he broke his wrist when trying to intercept a kick by footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
Pensioner Fred Harrison said he was in the stands with his son at Middlesbrough Football Club’s Riverside Stadium for the club’s match with Manchester United on Sunday April 6 when the accident happened.
The 68-year-old from Hartlepool saw the star striker take a shot and realised the football was going to hit him.
“It came over the top of the crossbar and it was headed straight for me,” he said.
“I wear glasses so I put my hand out to stop it and broke my wrist, although I didn’t know it at the time.”
The match, which saw Ronaldo score an early goal, ended with a 2-2 draw.
The grandfather of six was persuaded by his wife Edith, 68, to go to the University Hospital of Hartlepool last Tuesday and doctors confirmed his wrist was broken.
Mr Harrison said the nurse who put his arm in plaster gave him a cast decorated with footballs.
“She thought it was quite comical,” he said.
He added that he does not have any hard feelings towards the footballer.
“It was just one of those things,” he said.
“Ronaldo is an amazing player and I would love to meet him if he reads about this.”
No one from Middlesbrough FC or Manchester United was available for comment.
