Security van raiders have made off with more than €100,000 after the driver's family was held hostage in Belfast.

They were held overnight at an empty house before the driver was ordered to take the van to Mount Ober golf club in the east of the city.

The ordeal began when robbers rushed into the family home in Downpatrick in Co Down.

The man's wife, son and daughter were then taken to Belfast, while the driver was instructed to go to work and pick up the money.

His vehicle was intercepted at the golf club and the cash transferred to a white van.

A police spokesperson said the family was uninjured but extremely traumatised by their ordeal.
