Police in the North have shot and killed a man in his 20s after the car he was travelling in allegedly struck two officers on the Crumlin Road near Lisburn, Co Antrim, last night.

Police said they opened fire after the car failed to stop at a checkpoint.

The second is in a stable condition.

Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan is due to investigate the incident and local SDLP MLA Patricia Lewsley said the officers involved should be suspended from duty pending the outcome of that investigation.
