Stephen Kenny bids to lead a third club to an FAI Cup final in five years when his new charges at Derry City take on Waterford United at the Brandywell in tonight’s semi-final (7.45pm).
Kenny led Longford Town and Bohemians into the final in previous seasons and tonight’s game is his fifth semi-final in a row.
Of course Kenny is not alone in the Derry camp in having big-time cup experience with City having won the competition two years ago.
It is one of the reasons Derry have been made the unlikely bookmakers’ favourites given the two sides’ respective league positions but a home draw could be the key factor in taking the Candystripes into the final.
Waterford, who will kick off tonight placed fourth in the premier division, are boosted by the likely return from ankle ligament damage of defender Pat Purcell but midfielder Vinny Sullivan misses out through suspension.
Derry, meanwhile, have problems down the left flank with Sean Hargan injured, Killian Brennan cup-tied and Michael Holt suspended, which could open the way for former Irish youth international Robbie Hedderman to make a surprise return to the fray having spent much of the season on loan with Sligo Rovers.
