Rail, broadband and wind/wave energy projects to benefit from €50bn EU fund

Ireland looks set to benefit from a new €50bn infrastructure plan.

The 10-year plan will see more funding for broadband and the development of wind and wave energy off Ireland's coasts.

Funding could also become available for rail links between Belfast and Dublin, and for ferry links between Dublin and Holyhead.

EU vice president ontTransport Sim Kallas said in Brussels today that the €50bn budget would vastly improve inter-connectivity right across the European Union.

"If transport does not move smoothly, the economy will weaken and fail to grow," he said. "We need to tackle missing links."
