An inquest into the death of a man murdered in Dundalk last Christmas has heard that his killer has since taken his own life.

The hearing was told that Stephen Quigley, of Woodbury Gardens and formerly of Kilkerley, was pronounced dead in an alleyway off the Avenue Road on December 28.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis, who carried out the post mortem, established that the 24-year-old had been stabbed 18 times in the neck and chest.

Detective Garda Charlie Geoghegan told the hearing that an extensive file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who directed that the matter could be closed and nobody else could be responsible for the killing.
