Wenger blasts transfer window

Arsene Wenger has branded the transfer window as “crazy” and claims it will deprive all fans of the hope of bringing in new players to turn their club around.

From midnight tomorrow, Barclaycard Premiership clubs will not be able to sell or buy players until the window opens again for a fortnight on December 31.

This has been introduced to bring England in line with the rest of European football, although the Nationwide League has been special dispensation to continue with transfers pending a FIFA ruling.

But Arsenal boss Wenger believes not allowing top-flight clubs to bring in new faces and fresh talent for the best part of four months could lead to sides becoming stale.

“It’s a bad thing,” he said. “Here in England it has been proven that you can still operate the transfer system in a different way.

“One of the most important things in this country is for us to be interesting and for people to watch and the second big thing is that supporters can always have hope.

“When you drive out of the stadium after losing a game, the fans shout at you ‘Come on, buy a player. We need a new striker.’ That’s part of the culture here.

“Now we have to wait until December 31 and that, for me, is a complete nonsense.

“It works well here, so why not make the rest of Europe fall into line with us? But they have done it in reverse and now the only country where the transfer system works has been forced to change its transfer system.

“It’s crazy.”
