The number of Irish women having abortions in Britain has reached a record high, according to figures released yesterday.

Last year, 6,625 women with Irish addresses travelled across the water for terminations, 1,629 of them in the final months of 2001.

Of those, 244 were under 20 years of age and 1,189 were in the 20-34 age group.

In 2000, the total number of Irish women having abortions in Britain was 6,388.
