Almost 90% of the public want Aer Lingus to reverse the decision to end its Shannon to Heathrow services, according to an opinion poll published this morning.

Almost 90% of the public want Aer Lingus to reverse the decision to end its Shannon to Heathrow services, according to an opinion poll published this morning.

The poll in the Irish Examiner also reveals that three quarters of people are unhappy with the Taoiseach's handling of the situation, while 60% say they will fly less with Aer Lingus as a result of the decision.

Just more than a half of all respondents said they opposed the privatisation of state agencies.

Meanwhile, an alliance of business and tourism groups in Shannon and its hinterland has called on the Government to support moves to get Aer Lingus to reverse the decision.

Yesterday, Ryanair said it would be willing to use its 25% shareholding - in conjunction with the Government's stake - to block the Aer Lingus plan at an extraordinary general meeting.
