The final Dáil debate on the Civil Partnership Bill is due to take place today in what gay rights advocates are calling an "historic advance for same-sex couples''.

The Gay and Lesbian Network (GLEN) is commending legislators across all parties for their efforts in bolstering the rights of gay and lesbian people in Ireland.

"It's a fantastic day and a great achievement for Irish society," said GLEN spokesman Kieran Ross.
