The family of a Dublin woman is pleading with the Government to help her rescue her six-year-old daughter who was abducted last week.

May Assad Monaghan was abducted from her Cyprus home by her father Mustafa Assad last Wednesday. He is believed to have taken her back to his home country, war-torn Syria.

Cypriot police have issued a warrant for Assad’s arrest.

May’s mother, Louise, is currently in Turkey and is contemplating crossing into Syria to rescue her daughter.

But Louise's sister Mandy is pleading with the Government to come to their aid and help rescue May.

"I just hope that the Irish Government will come in and help us," Mandy said.

"Nobody has been in contact with us - and now my sister feels, because nobody has come to help us, that she is going to have to go and rescue her daughter herself.

"She said to me: 'Mandy, even if I have to stay there, at least I'm with my little girl'."
