A man was kidnapped on Monday and released the following day after a ransom was paid, the PSNI said today.

The man was snatched on Monday night in the Warrenpoint area of Co Down, close to the border city of Newry, and a ransom demand made.

The following day he was released after a ransom was paid, said a police spokesman.

Police later arrested a number of people and recovered a quantity of cash as a result of what the spokesman called “a major police operation“.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland declined to give further details, saying their investigations were in the early stages.
