Plans will be announced later today for the normalisation of policing in the North.

Plans will be announced later today for the normalisation of policing in the North.

The Northern Secretary, Peter Hain, will also announce the details of plans to remove watch towers and military back-up for policing.

There will also be a reduction in the number of troops in the light of last week's decision by the IRA to end its armed campaign.

Speaking on the BBC, Mr Hain said he would like to see a situation in which such security measures are no longer needed.

He also said politicians in the North should be sitting around the table talking.
