Bolton manager Gary Megson is quietly confident his side can progress in the UEFA Cup next week when they face Red Star in Belgrade.
A victory there would surely see them progress to the last 32, after three successive draws.
However, Megson will be looking for his team to show the kind of form which saw them defeat Manchester United – rather than the timid display that resulted in a last-gasp 1-1 draw against Aris Salonika last night.
Greece winger Stelios Giannakopoulos stunned his fellow countrymen when he swept home a cross from substitute Mikel Alonso in stoppage time, after Calvo had opened the scoring.
Megson said: “Of course, we can go to Belgrade and get a victory, but if we go there and play in the manner we did against Aris, we won’t win.
“There was a standard set at the weekend when we played United that we need to attain every time we play. Maybe the team was not the same, but the standards have to remain high. We did not give ourselves the opportunity to play well.”
Stelios has found himself on the fringes of the Wanderers team, and this was only his second goal of the season.
Megson said: “We thought he would be right up for the game, because we were playing a Greek team. He has a knack of being in the right place at the right time. He has come up and saved us.
“Stelios is quite versatile – but when you have the standard of squad like we have, there is competition all over the place. It is a fact of life at this level. But there is no one here who is out with the washing.
“People may not have started as much as they would like. But it doesn’t mean there have been any pre-conceived ideas about who will or who won’t play. It is purely and simply down to form and what we see on training pitch.”
A crowd of little more than 10,000 attended the match, but Megson is sympathetic to supporters.
He said: “The small turn-out is understandable. It was live on television, and money is tight at this time of year. The players know how difficult it is for people. We are thankful for those who did come.”
