British actor Paul Bettany found filming the battle scenes for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World “both dull and scary at the same time.”
Bettany, who plays Maturin, the ship’s doctor, told the Hollywood Reporter: “It is a really bad mix. It is dull because it takes so long to shoot and it is scary because there is so much smoke and you know there are about ten people who have to run towards you with sharp swords.”
Unlike many of the people he worked with on the film, Bettany did not succumb to seasickness.
“A third of the cast and crew were sick,” he recalled.
“I don’t know if you have ever seen 90 people puke in unison but it’s quite nice. It’s like jealousy: it’s awful if it’s happening to you, but otherwise it’s really funny to watch.”
