Government ministers are expected to make a decision today to postpone the controversial pay rises they were awarded earlier this year.
There has been much speculation that the cabinet may "lead by example" and delay the pay rises due to the economic downturn.
Green Party Senator Dan Boyle says he would support the move as a "confidence-building measure" to "sweeten" the cutbacks that are expected to be agreed by the cabinet today.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, meanwhile, says the Government should also reduce the number of junior ministers and abolish unnecessary quangos.
