CORI: 'Rich and poor divide is €243 a week'

The Conference of Religious of Ireland (CORI) is calling on the Government to redress the imbalance between rich and poor.

The Conference of Religious of Ireland (CORI) is calling on the Government to redress the imbalance between rich and poor.

According to CORI, the Government’s budgetary decisions in its last term have increased the rich/poor divide to over €243 per week.

It said the Government has consistently misdirected valuable resources.

CORI’s spokesperson, Fr. Sean Healy, said the Special Savings Investment Account (SSIA) scheme is just one of many examples.

"This has resulted in people, who can take up the full value of it, gaining in the coming years €14 a week in interest payments," he said.

"That's a situation where huge resources are going to those who are already better off.

"At the same time there is a quarter of a million people in Ireland living on social welfare payments of €118 a week.

"That's all they have and it is not possible to live life with dignity on that kind of money".
