The trial of Mayo farmer Padraig Nally accused of the manslaughter of a father-of-11 has been adjourned after he was taken to hospital with chest pains.

The trial judge Mr Justice Kevin O’Higgins told the jury of eight men and four women that they should now return on Monday. It was the forth day of evidence at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

The judge said: “I’ve been told Mr Nally the accused was taken to hospital last night for the investigation of a medical complaint and he’s unable to attend the court today. I can’t tell you any more because I don’t know any more but its accepted this is bona fide and in this case the trial can’t go on today.”

Padraig Nally (aged 62) of Funshinaugh, Cross, Claremorris has pleaded not guilty to the unlawful killing of Traveller John ‘Frog’ Ward after he entered his land on October 14, 2004. The 42-year-old from Carrowbone Halting Site on the outskirts of Galway city had been shot twice and beaten with a stick. The second and fatal shot entered his heart and left lung.

Mr Nally’s sister Maureen, who has been sitting beside her brother since the start of the case, was in court for today’s brief hearing.
