Two Americans and one Norwegian have drowned off the Cape Town coast in South Africa when their boat was hit by a freak wave, tourism officials said today.

The dead men were among a group of 10 on a shark cage diving expedition. There were nine crew members.

The boat had anchored and was about to lower the first group of tourists into the water, which is infested with Great Whites.

Chairwoman of the Great White Shark Protection Foundation, Mariette Hopley, says everyone was flung into the water.

Other boats in the area rescued 16 people. They were taken to hospital today for checks on internal injuries and are all in stable condition.
