Hoops and Star battle for third spot

Hoops are Belfast Star clash on Saturday with the winner guaranteed third place in Conference A and a place in the quarter-finals of this season’s Nivea For Men’s SuperLeague.

Conference B regular season winners Abrakebabra Tigers will bring a depleted side to Killarney for their Kerry derby with Mustang St Paul’s, while Conference A regular season winners DART Killester entertain UCD/Marian.

UCC Demons can make a return to winning ways at home to Limerick Lions with DCU Saints bidding to continue their good form in 2008 at the expense of UU.

Neptune, assured of their third place finish in Conference B, travel to the Ballina Sports Complex to take on Merry Monk Ballina.

The meeting of Hoops and Belfast Star is the final piece of unfinished business as we head into the final weekend of games in the regular season.

Hoops are no stranger to winning last day battles to book their Play-Off place after booking their passage last season courtesy of a final day success over St Vincent’s.

"We have the experience of last year’s win over Vincent’s and hopefully that should stand to us in this winner takes all game," said Hoops player/coach Jonathan Reed.

"We have already beaten Star twice this season but that can also count against us. No team wants to lose three games against the same team in a season so that will act as plenty motivation for them.

"We have had a mixed season but we have a great chance of putting that right on Saturday," added Reed.

Meanwhile, Star coach Darren O’Neill is hoping his side can make it third time lucky when they make the trip to the National Basketball Arena on Saturday.

"We have a poor record against Hoops this season but we have a wonderful chance to put that right on Saturday," said O’Neill.

"We were very poor against them in the first game but there was nothing between the sides when we played in our place so it’s probably as even as a match as you will find.

"We didn’t play well against DCU Saints in our last outing but if we can produce the sort of displays that beat DART Killester then we are in with a chance."

Abrakebabra Tigers will be relieved to have their Play-Off place assured with a depleted squad set for their all Kingdom clash away to Mustang St Paul’s.

Tigers will be without Kieran Donaghy and Michael Quirke, while their US star CJ Hadley will miss the remainder of the season with a serious hand injury.

Meanwhile, St Paul’s hope to welcome back Mark Greene from injury while Philip O’Connor will also return to the hard court after captaining his school St. Brendans Killarney to a Munster Colleges football title last Sunday.

Mustangs will be hoping to finish the season on a high and are already looking forward to next year. Coaches Shane Horgan and Brian Clarke have been concentrating on developing the younger players in the squad and they have done well to overcome the departures of Eoin O'Brien, Jarlath Lee and Dainius Varanauskas, who have all left for various reasons over the past few months.

Limerick Lions will finish off an indifferent season with a tough clash away to UCC Demons at the Mardyke Arena.

"It has been a frustrating season for us, we had injuries to players that didn’t help us," said Lions coach Matt Hall.

"However, our biggest factor was in our finishing out games. We didn’t close out well, and because of that we lost games we could have won. Our Irish players gained good experience and this will stand to them in future seasons.

"UCC Demons will be tough, and although we have a few injury worries from last weekend, we will be going out to get a fully committed performance and to push Demons all the way. That way we will give ourselves a chance of winning the game."

A full strength DCU side entertain UU with their Play-Off clash with Neptune looming large, while DART Killester boast a full quota as they look to finish the season

Neptune travel to Ballina on Saturday content in the knowledge they are already through to the Play-Off’s but will be looking to sign off the regular season with a morale boosting win away to Merry Monk.

Meanwhile, in the final weekend of Basketball Ireland’s womens SuperLeague, DCU Mercy welcome UL Aughinish in what will be a dress rehearsal of their Play-Off clash at the end of March.

Mercy will be without Ann-Marie Healy and Helena Kenny who are struggling with the flu but are expected to return in time for the Play-Off’s, while UL are at full strength.

Meteors entertain regular season winners Team Montenotte Hotel Cork with Montenotte preparing without Irish international Michelle Fahy due to a knee injury. Grainne Dwyer is also a doubt with an eye injury.

Waterford Wildcats make the trip to the capital with a full strength squad, while DART Killester have to plan without Shauna O’Connor (Thumb injury), Ali Maguire (camogie commitments) and Jade Daly due to family commitments.
