Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood have halved with Chad Campbell and Vaughn Taylor in in today's Ryder Cup foursomes match at the K Club.
Westwood drew first blood for the Europeans with Montgomerie’s approach to the par-four second leaving the Worksop golfer a seven-foot putt which he holed.
But the pair could make ’only’ par on the long fourth and that allowed the Americans to draw level again.
Taylor pulled his approach to the sixth into water to give Europe two putts from 25 feet to win the hole and when Westwood rolled it close they were back in front.
But water cost Europe at the next as the Englishman’s approach was wet and although Montgomerie chipped up to four feet they lost the hole to a par.
Taylor sank a 20-footer at the ninth for birdie but Montgomerie chipped in for a half.
Westwood had a five-footer at the long 10th for a par and a half but lipped out to hand the advantage to their opponents.
The Englishman made up for that error by leaving his partner a six-footer at the short 12th and he duly obliged to draw level again.
At the 15th Taylor drove the ball into the lake to the right of the fairway, which allowed Europe to win the hole with a par four.
Montgomerie then missed the 17th fairway and was faced with a tricky greenside chip which he drilled past, allowing America to win with a par and go down the last all square.
With the Americans already on the final green in two, Montgomerie drilled a three wood to 18 feet but Campbell then rolled a 30-yard putt to within a couple of feet.
Westwood’s eagle putt shaved the hole and the match finished all square.
