Police board member vows to continue

A Catholic member of a local policing board in Northern Ireland today vowed to continue her work despite an arson attack at her home.

Flammable liquid was poured over a car belonging to Mary McCrea’s son outside her home in Sion Mills last night.

Mrs McCrea is a member of the Strabane District Policing Partnership.

A hoax device was left outside her house last month as hardline republicans continued their campaign of threats and attacks against Catholic members of the board.

Mrs McCrea said: “I thought the days of faceless men coming in the night were over but apparently not.

“They are still here. I will be still in the DPP.”

Former West Tyrone Assembly member Eugene McMenamin commended Mrs McCrea for her bravery.

“She is very adamant that she is going to continue and I applaud her for that,” the nationalist SDLP member said.

“DPP members have had to endure a lot of pressure over the past few weeks but they are standing firm.

“Obviously she has concerns about the safety of her family especially as this was her son’s car.

“An incident like this illustrates the need for people to remain vigilant even though an attack hasn’t occurred before this for eight or nine days.

“People are still on amber alert. But the people responsible for this have to face up to the reality that these attacks are repudiated by the nationalist community and they are simply out of touch.”
