Unionist claims IRA suspects were buying explosives

A leading anti-agreement unionist has claimed that the three suspected Provisional IRA men arrested in Colombia at the weekend were being trained in the use of a deadly new explosive.

The DUP’s Peter Robinson claimed today that James Monaghan, Martin McCauley and Niall Connolly were in Colombia to finalise the purchase of this new bomb-making material.

The three men were arrested in Bogota after arriving on a flight from territory held by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Mr Robinson said: “While PIRA was providing FARC with training in urban terrorism and armaments, they benefit from the two-way exchange by gaining training to this latest bomb-making process and its key ingredient, which takes explosive technology to a new and even more deadly level.

"This sinister development is causing massive concern to those who aware of it in the UK intelligence and security community and the potential danger from this revolutionary new form of explosive is greater than has ever before been faced.”
