A Galway woman accused of beating a Newry pensioner to death with a crucifix on Christmas Day three years ago has been found guilty of murder.

A Galway woman accused of beating a Newry pensioner to death with a crucifix on Christmas Day three years ago has been found guilty of murder.

Karen Walsh was handed a life sentence at Belfast Crown Court for killing 81-year-old Maire Rankin at her Dublin Road home in the early hours of Christmas in 2008.

45-year-old Walsh, who worked in Dublin but owned the house next door to Mrs Rankin in Newry, had denied the murder.
