McLaren's miserable lack of pace in the Bahrain Grand Prix was evident on lap 33 when Takuma Sato in the BAR comfortably swept around the outside of David Coutlhard at a chicane to claim sixth spot.

Coulthard regained the placing when Sato made his next pit-stop at the end of lap 37, by which time Michael Schumacher’s advantage was just over 13 seconds.

Montoya was almost 25 seconds down and praying for a rare reliability failure to hit the Ferrari to stop Schumacher from adding to his victories in Australia and Malaysia.
