The Minister for Communications has published a draft list of sporting events that he believes should continue to be available free to air on television.

The list was published after Communications Minister Dermot Ahern and Sports Minister John O'Donoghue met officials from the GAA, the FAI and the IRFU.

The list includes the Olympics, the All-Ireland senior football and hurling finals, Ireland's home and away qualifying games in the European soccer championships, the Champions League and the World Cup qualifiers and finals.

Other events include the Six-Nations in rugby and the Rugby World Cup.

The Grand National and Irish Derby are also on the list, but the FAI cup final and the Irish Open in Golf are not.

The public will be consulted through the forum on broadcasting before a final decision is reached.
