Czech Republic's 'barbaric' treatment of children slammed

The government of the Czech Republic was under pressure tonight to end “barbaric” treatment of handicapped children.

Scottish Labour MEP Catherine Stihler said she was seeking European Parliament backing to demand EU government action against the Czech practice of keeping such children in caged beds.

Ms Stihler said: “I was horrified to learn that the practice of caging mentally handicapped children exists in a country that has so recently joined the European Union.

“This sort of medieval ’treatment’ has been long condemned by Human Rights groups, the EU and the UN.”

Ms Stihler went on: “Many high profile campaigners, including the children’s author J.K Rowling, have spoken out on this issue. I want to make sure that any assurances from the Czech Health

"Authorities are followed up and this deplorable practice is ended.”
