Pop Idol's Darius given lifeline by ailing contestant Rik

Pop Idol's Darius Danesh survived his first show after being reinstated last night.

He replaced Rik Waller who had to retire with a throat infection.

Darius impressed the judges with his version of When A Child Is Born.

The Scottish student says he is delighted at being given another chance, but says he is disappointed for his unwell fellow contestant.

A Pop Idol spokeswoman said: "Rik is out of the show and Darius stepped in for him. Rik is obviously upset and earlier in the week he said he would be devastated to have to withdraw.

"Darius said he would rather be competing with Rik than taking his place, but wished him the best of luck. All at Pop Idol wish Rik a speedy recovery."

Jessica Garlick is the latest contestant to be booted off the TV show.
