The HSE has confirmed that one of its ambulances had to be replaced yesterday while transferring a baby between hospitals in Cork and Dublin.

A spokesperson says crew decided to transfer the patient to a different ambulance after they became concerned with a smell on board the vehicle.

The spokesperson has insisted, however, that there was no evidence of any fire.

The vehicle was the same model as three other Mercedes ambulances which caught fire in recent weeks.

The HSE made modifications to its Mercedes fleet and says it is confident the risk of fires has been removed.
