The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey today invited tenders for carrying out a review of the electricity sector in Ireland.

The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey today invited tenders for carrying out a review of the electricity sector in Ireland.

The announcement signals the commencement of the examination of the sector promised by the Minister.

Successful consultants will be asked to examine existing arrangements and assess their appropriateness, as well as making recommendations for the sector into the future.

The impetus for this review stems from the perceived difficulties relating to ESB's dominance, particularly in power generation, and the need to attract new entrants and develop competition in the sector.

"There are some major challenges facing Ireland's electricity sector, particularly in developing competition, ensuring future security of supply, achieving our renewable targets and delivering good value to consumers," said Minister Dempsey.

"The findings of this review will assist us in making informed decisions on the best structures and arrangements to help us meet these challenges."
