The ministers responsible for transport on both sides of the Border are meeting today to discuss the proposed harmonisation of road safety regulations.

Britain's Transport Minister will also be at the talks.

The mutual recognition of penalty points across Ireland and the UK is expected to be on the agenda, along with the issue of driver disqualifications.

At present, a motorist who is disqualified in the North can still get a licence to drive in the Republic and vice versa.

The situation also applies to Britain, but today's talks will focus on ways to close these loopholes.
