The British and Irish governments have issued a statement saying they will be going ahead with the St Andrews proposals.

The governments said they are confident the proposals present the basis for a political settlement.

The two governments said they had allowed the Northern parties time to consult with their members.

The statement said they believe the St Andrews proposals implemented in good faith, would provide the basis for a settlement resting on support for power-sharing and the police.

The governments said securing these objectives remains their priority and the British government said it will bring forward legislation to give effect to the St Andrews proposals.
