Public asked for views on Dublin city-wide 30 km speed limit
A proposal to extend a 30km per hour speed limit across Dublin city will go out to public consultation today.
The limit, to be introduced by Dublin City Council, would cover most parts of the city centre and suburbs by next year.
Currently there is a 30km/hr speed limit in the core city centre, Dublin 1 & 2, in Marino, Dublin 3 and in Irishtown and Ballsbridge in Dublin 4.
Dublin City Council say the proposed extensions to the areas covered by the 30 kms would see an increase of less than 20 seconds to the journey times of most motorists.
Advocates of the new lower limit say it will make Dublin safer for both drivers and pedestrians.
However, president of the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation Joe Herron said he was worried the move may have the opposite effect by making pedestrians less wary of passing traffic.
He said: "Since they brought in this 30 kms the city centre area, it has made O'Connell Street one large pedestrian crossing, and several other places too. People just use it like that now - they know the cars are going slowly."
