Two years added to jail terms after Ennis death
Two men who killed a young teacher in an attack described as "cowardly, brutal and grossly violent" have had two years added to their sentences by the Court of Criminal Appeal.
Harry Dinan of Waterpark Heights, Ennis and his nephew Kevin Dinan, of Clarehill, Clarecastle, were originally jailed for five and four years respectively, having pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Brian Casey on O'Connell Square, Ennis, on St Stephen's Day, 2009.
Harry and Kevin Dinan were jailed in 2010 for punching 26-year-old Brian Casey to death in an unprovoked early morning attack.
The teacher was knocked to the ground from a single blow by Harry Dinan and as he lay there, most likely semi-conscious, Kevin Dinan punched him repeatedly about the face and head.
The DPP secured a review of the five- and four-year manslaughter sentences handed down at Ennis Circuit Court, and was successful in its claim that the penalties were too lenient.
The Court of Criminal Appeal has today added a further two years on to each man's jail terms.
Presiding judge Mr Justice Liam McKechnie described it a "cowardly, brutal and grossly violent" attack that "caused the death of a young man with his whole life in front of him".
