Ukraine's parliament has declared the presidential poll invalid, saying it "failed to show the voters' will".

The parliament is holding an emergency session in a bid to resolve the standoff over the disputed presidential election.

Meanwhile, the European Union has said that the best outcome would be new elections.

Dutch Foreign Mininster Bernard Bot, whose country holds the EU presidency, said: "If we are heading for elections, it should happen rather soon, before the end of the year."
