Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has told the Gardaí to focus on combating organised crime, drug trafficking and dissident republican activity over the coming year.

The three issues are top of a list of policing priorities for 2006 published by the minister today.

Mr McDowell also wants the Gardaí to make their presence more visible in both urban and rural communities, with an emphasis on tackling vandalism, intimidation and other anti-social behaviour.

He also said today that he wanted a voluntary garda reserve established by September of next year and wanted all garda divisions to submit crime statistics on a quarterly basis.
