SIPTU has accused the Government of treating basic social services as commodities instead of entitlements for all citizens.
Addressing a regional conference in Tralee, SIPTU president Jack O’Connor said we have among the lowest social expenditure in Europe, despite having one of the strongest economies.
He lamented what he said was the widening gap between rich and poor, and said that healthcare and education are now only readily available to those who can afford them.
Mr O’Connor said the majority of parents on lower or middle incomes cannot access the private education institutions, which are breeding a new generation of better-off people to occupy the better-paying positions in society.
