The Red Hand Defenders have claimed responsibility for today’s murder of a Belfast postal worker.

The 20-year-old victim worked in the Whitewell area of Belfast. He leaves a partner and a child under the age of one.

Detective Superintendent Roy Suitters, who is leading the murder investigation, has said ‘This poor fellow has obviously been targeted as a Catholic working in a loyalist estate and for no other reason’.

Meanwhile, unions said staff at the main sorting office at Mallusk, Co Antrim, a short distance from where the shooting took place, had walked out.
