The Government has reportedly approved a request from Bus Eireann that its vehicles be allowed to drive on hard shoulders to avoid traffic congestion.

Reports this morning said Bus Eireann figures presented to the Government had shown that gridlock was costing the company €20m every year.

Some Expressway services are reportedly experiencing delays of more than an hour on some journeys to Dublin because of congestion on the M50 motorway.

This morning’s reports said new arrangements would allow Bus Eireann vehicles to use the hard shoulders on all key approach roads to Dublin – including the N2, N3, N4, N6, N8 and N11 – in an effort to address the matter.

However, the buses will have to observe a slower speed limit than traffic travelling in normal lanes.
