Liverpool today moved to calm fears that England striker Michael Owen may have fractured his foot during the Champions League defeat at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 22-year-old received a kick on his foot during the 4-2 loss in Germany and will have a scan later today to determine the extent of the damage.

Reds manager Gerard Houllier told the club’s official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: ‘‘We hope it is not a fracture but he will have a scan later today and we will have a better idea then.’’

However, a club spokesman insisted that the problem was severe bruising but he may miss Saturday’s match at Sunderland.
