The Competition Authority has confirmed that it is investigating allegations of price-fixing at a number of home heating oil firms in Galway and Mayo.

In a statement released today, the authority said it has conducted searches at a number of companies in the last two weeks under the Competition Acts of 1991 and 1996.

The body refused to reveal more details because the matter is still under investigation.

The Competition Authority’s role is to promote and safeguard the economic interests of consumers and businesses by cracking down on anti-competitive behaviour.

Where evidence of anti-competitive practices is uncovered, the authority can bring court proceedings against those involved or refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
