Eircom name new CEO

Former Vodafone Ireland chief executive Paul Donovan has been named as the new CEO of Eircom, the company said today.

Former Vodafone Ireland chief executive Paul Donovan has been named as the new CEO of Eircom, the company said today.

"Paul’s vast industry experience and specific knowledge of the Irish market will be critical in leading the Group through the major challenges that lie ahead," said Eircom board chairman Ned O'Sullivan in a statement.

"He has worked with some of the largest international brands, and has been extremely successful developing and implementing strategic programmes which achieved strong growth for those operations."

Mr. Donovan spent nine years with Vodafone, which included three years as chief executive of Vodafone Ireland. Most recently he was Vodafone CEO for Central Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific. He will take up his latest position on July 1.

Eircom had been without a permanent CEO since the resignation of Rex Comb earlier this year. Mr Sullivan thanked Acting CEO Cathal Magee for having fulfilled the role in the interim.

Earlier this week, Eircom announced 1,200 jobs losses under a three-year cost-cutting deal agreed with unions. The company is also opposed to a takeover approach from a group of Australian businessmen, led by Rob Topfer, who was involved in the takeover of Eircom in 2006.
