The 'Food and Drink Industry of Ireland' group believes a so-called 'fat-tax' will not tackle the problem of obesity here.
The government is considering the introduction of a tax on sugary drinks and high-fat foods such as chips, pizza and meat.
It is hoped the levy would reduce the number of overweight people in Ireland and generate some much needed revenue for the exchequer.
But FDII Director Paul Kelly doesn't believe a 'fat-tax' is the right approach: "In Ireland we produce amongst the safest, most nutritious and healthiest food in the world, so it's very important that the government puts in place measures which will improve the competitiveness of our industry rather than damaging it.
"Specifically in relation to obesity, what's required is a whole of society approach to deal with the problem. The industry has a huge part to play in that and we are and will continue to work with the government on that."
