The introduction of the Government’s workplace smoking ban is expected to create litter headaches for business owners, who are responsible for the upkeep of the area in front of their premises.

The Department of the Environment has confirmed that business owners are required to clean up any litter in front of their premises that is caused by their customers or staff.

The measure was included in litter laws introduced last year.

With smokers now forced to leave their workplace to smoke a cigarette, the amount of butts being thrown on the ground is expected to rise, thereby creating extra clean-up work for business owners.
