A strong earthquake rocked parts of Indonesia’s tsunami-ravaged Aceh province today, but there were no reports of damage or casualties, an official said.
The magnitude-6.1 quake, which was centred under the Indian Ocean around 55 miles west of the provincial capital Banda Aceh, did not trigger a tsunami, the local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.
Aceh, on the north-western tip of Sumatra Island, was the worst hit by a magnitude-9 quake on December 26, which triggered waves that killed more than 126,000 in Aceh and about 47,000 in 10 other countries surrounding the Indian Ocean.
The province has since been hit by daily aftershocks, which sometimes trigger panic.
