AA Roadwatch criticises licence regulations

AA Roadwatch is hitting out at the new rules on provisional drivers, which the Minister for Transport has now postponed until the end of June.

Noel Dempsey gave in to pressure yesterday to delay the regulations which state that drivers on a second provisional licence can now only drive in the company of a fully-licensed driver.

Conor Faughnan of the AA Roadwatch says to avoid confusion these rules should only be enforced for people driving on the new learning permits, which are being issued instead of provisional licences.

"Provisional licences only last for two years anyway so in the course of the next two years everybody will have cycled across the new permit.

"In our view this would be far less confusing and they wouldn't have to send out mixed signals to the driving population."
