High Court to rule in Liam Adams extradition case

The High Court is due to rule today whether to extradite Gerry Adams' brother Liam back to the North on rape charges.

The High Court is due to rule today whether to extradite Gerry Adams' brother Liam back to the North on rape charges.

Liam Adams denies multiple counts of rape, indecent assault and gross indecency against his daughter Áine Tyrell in Belfast between 1977 and 1983.

Áine Tyrell's allegations against her father became public in a UTV television documentary in December 2009 and were aired again last July during Liam Adams' extradition hearing.

His lawyers argued the broadcast portrayed him as a monster with every allegation reported as if it were fact.

They said this, along with the delay in bringing the charges, would jeopardise Liam Adams' chances of getting a fair trial.

In reply, the State submitted that these are concerns that could be addressed pre-trial by a Northern court.

A decision is due on whether to extradite Liam Adams.
