Nine people were injured today when a train derailed on the main Derry to Coleraine rail line.

At least three carriages from the 12.50pm Belfast to Derry service came off the tracks, with one of them rolling down a steep embankment and ending up on its side on the beach.

A spokesperson for Translink, the company which operates the train, said two people were hospitalised after the incident, but she could not say how serious their injuries were.

One of them is believed to be the driver. Around 20 people were on board the train at the time.

Investigators are examining the possibility that the derailment may have been caused by a landslide on the tracks.
