Kelleway's Vortex heading for Canada

Gay Kelleway hopes to run Vortex in tomorrow’s Countrywide Steel & Tubes Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket before taking her stable star to Canada.

Miss Kelleway has not been afraid to hatch ambitious plans for the six-year-old in the past and has campaigned him in Sweden and Japan.

She is now targeting Vortex towards the Atto Mile at Woodbine on September 18, but warned that he would not line-up for tomorrow’s Listed six-furlong affair if she thinks the ground is unsuitable.

“He is in blinding form and he is going to go for the Atto Mile at Woodbine on the 18th,” said Miss Kelleway.

“He gets a few allowances there, and a couple of other British horses might go for it. It’s on grass and Martin Dwyer will ride.

“He needs to have a prep race first and I would like to run him tomorrow, but otherwise he’ll have a racecourse gallop.

“I walked the course at Newmarket today and it is beautiful ground, I’m just not sure what it will be like tomorrow after a day of racing.”

Having built up a reputation as a top-notch all-weather performer, Vortex has proved just as adept on turf and landed the Group Three Criterion Stakes at Newmarket in June.
